The One About Post-Degree Blues (part 1)

Change excites me as much as it scares me. I've always known that change is the only thing that is constant in life but not all change can be taken in a stride - some are more daunting than others. I guess, this chapter of my life is one of those.

I have finished my degree about three weeks ago and after years of routine and focusing on succeeding in academics, I am at that phase where I have yet to figure out what's next. Because I have been volunteering the past few weeks and enjoying the summer, it isn't until today when I'm looking for jobs that I feel scared about not knowing what to do.

It isn't like I don't have any further goals. I still want to do a Master's and then become a police officer. I know that there is still a possibility of them happening in the future if I really want to pursue them. But where am I right now, career and/or job wise, isn't anywhere near where I imagined myself to be after spending a good portion of my life in school.

There is also random moments where I question my choice of study and I could not help but wonder if I was better of pursuing something far more practical than an arts degree in psychology. But I also know that there is no point in revisiting past decisions for I wouldn't be the person that I am today had I gone into a different route. Questioning why I have gone into this field would undermine the experiences and everything I have learned throughout the last four years and those four years were the best four years of my life.

I know that the road ahead is not going to be easy. There will be days that it will be hard to find motivation or even look at the positive side of things and I guess, that's okay.

Every time someone asks me what's my plan or what's next for me, I always opt for the simplest answer - with the sincerest and biggest smile I say, "it's a surprise."

I know that the process wouldn't be easy and simple, it would take a lot of patience, hard work, and faith. Faith not exclusively in spiritual level but faith in myself and faith in the process that I am where I am because this is exactly where I am supposed to be.

If you are in the same 'space' as I am, fear not my friend. We are where we're supposed to be and one way or the other we'll figure it out.
